  • Goedhuis, November 2018

This excellent premier cru is in the middle of the village, below Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. With striking Black Forest fruits, it has noticeable richness and a profound tannic core. The overall weight of fruit closes the wine down a bit on the finish, however with time this will evolve to show great character.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 87

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru is showing a lot of new oak on the nose that occludes the terroir expression, although there is plenty of fruit here and the oak should be assimilated with time. The palate is medium-bodied with bitter wood tannins that dry out the finish and leave the mouth feeling puckered. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2024 - 2030

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 87-90?

Here too there is ample wood influence (though no menthol) to the black cherry, plum, pungent earth and forest floor scents. Oddly given the usual differences in size and weight, the medium-bodied flavors are not as rich though they are just as mineral-inflected on the austere and extremely rustic finish that is borderline tough and quite grippy. Millandes isn't always the most accessible terroir young but this is foursquare to the point of being raspy. This may age out but my sense is that it would be better to drink this on the younger side with good as I suspect that it will dry out with extended keeping.

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Morey Saint Denis

Morey St. Dénis often suffers from an identity crisis. They are more fruit forward than the wines of Gevrey Chambertin, yet more structured than those of Chambolle Musigny. It seems in this sensethat they are like middle children, always wanting to please yet not standing out as the noisy one or the notably quiet one. They are however crowd pleasers and for those who feel that Gevreys are too muscular and Chambolles too feminine; Moreys seem just right, offering velvety tannins and tangible fruit. The village offers five grand cru vineyards including Clos de la Roche, Clos St. Dénis and Clos des Lambrays which nonetheless can rival those of neighbouring villages in terms of quality (some even view them as the best in the Côte de Nuits) and various premier cru vineyards.
