  • Goedhuis, November 2020

Les Preuses is a sunny south facing vineyard high on the slope. The wines from this Grand Cru can be more approachable in their youth and the stony soils mean they often have a beautiful, steely personality. Supple and poised, with the acidity and minerality to evolve for decades.

  • Burghound, December 2020, Score: 92-94

Firm reduction masks the underlying fruit at present. The delicious medium weight flavors also possess almost painful intensity along with outstanding minerality that is enhanced by the clean, crisp and strikingly persistent finish. This too is going to need extended forbearance.

  • Decanter, October 2020, Score: 95

Taking its name from 'pierre' (stone), Preuses is located high on the Grand Cru slope, facing south/southwest, with plenty of exposure. Although the warmth of the vintage comes through this is a fine Preuses. The palate shows purity of stone-fruit, combined with a citrus-zest, mineral character on both the nose and palate. Already approachable but there is so much more potential to come. Finishes with a long, savoury, lingering aftertaste. Drink 2022-2030

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2020, Score: 93-96

From 70 year old vines, which consistently deliver a powerful wine every year. The 2019 has an all-enveloping nose, since this vineyard can carry the sunshine, very complete and the fruit just keeps coming. A touch of sucrosity, but good acidity behind, lemon scented, with a touch of tannin at the back. Long, powerful and balanced. 4 stars.

The Billaud-Simon name is long-established in Chablis, dating back to 1815 when Charles-Louis-Noël Billaud purchased his first vineyards. The estate remained in family ownership for 200 years until Erwan Faiveley purchased Billaud-Simon for Joseph Faiveley in 2015. This represents a new era for the Faiveley family, one of the Côte d’Or’s most significant vineyard owners, now investing their expertise and commitment to producing great wines in the Yonne and Chablis with approximately 18 hectares of exceptional vineyard holdings including four premiers crus and four grands crus. Under the guidance of Wine Director Olivier Bailly, they remain respectful to the traditions of the estate and continue to sell the wines under the Billaud-Simon name. The style is graceful and pure. Olivier seeks to make wines with true appellational authenticity. Oak is kept to minimal levels, only used judiciously, allowing the natural fruit content to express itself to a maximum.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
