Very much Crozes Hermitage but with more… From old vines on terraced slopes that are actually on the Hermitage hill. Brilliant dark purple colour, a real firework of aromas, full of rich bramble and blackberry fruits. An extremely attractive style, with succulent sweet dark berry flavours, and the noticeable generosity of fruit is perfectly balanced by the line of tannic grip and a touch of acid freshness on the finish. Full of life and beautifully composed.

Not yet bottled, the 2019 Crozes-Ermitage Les Varonniers comes from the Varogne lieu-dit located just to the west of Hermitage. This is a cooler, more shaded vineyard of pure granite soils, and I always find an Hermitage-like character in this wine. Lots of blackberry, cassis, crushed stone, leather, and violet notes emerge from the glass, and it's rich, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, with lots of structure yet more than enough fruit. The quality of this cuvée has soared recently and the 2019 will be another gem readers will love.

In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor Chapoutier was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. Seven generations later, we find Michel, forty something, with a real passion for the expression of soils, at the head of this exceptional vineyard. This young, determined man has succeeded in combining the past with daring and creativity. Michel took the domaine entirely biodynamic and eschews the use of cultured yeasts. His favoured approach is to avoid the use of press wine.Read less

Region

Crozes-Hermitage

The northern Rhône's largest appellation, Crozes-Hermitage produces approximately 8 times more than its more distinguished neighbour, Hermitage. Crozes, too, has both red and whites similar to Hermitage and in many ways is very similar in style, though less concentrated and complex. Plump, silky and smooth, they are usually made for early consumption; however certain producers have been known to make Crozes-Hermitages which need to cellared for several years and can be further kept for up to a decade.
