  • Antonio Galloni, February 2022, Score: 94

The 2019 Ornellaia Bianco is a very reserved wine. It does not appear to have the depth of some of its predecessors, but that is mostly attributable to a shift in picking earlier and using more large format oak. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint, sage and green pear lend energy to this taut, Bordeaux-inspired blend. Readers should plan on cellaring this for at least a year. Drink 2022-2029.

Lots of sweat pear and ripe green apple on the nose with some lemon grass and green melon. Medium-to full-bodied with a solid core of fruit that is tight and focused. Stone and dried-flower undertones to it. Vivid, lemony finish. Serious phenolic tension and framing to the wine. Drinkable now, but will age beautifully in time. Drink or hold.

  • Decanter, February 2022, Score: 97

So sophisticated and elegant, a brilliant expression of Sauvignon Blanc with smoky, stone, lemon aromas alongside pear and green apple - aromatic and so open. Excellent mouthfeel, there's such a lovely weight, slightly viscous with a hint of sweetness but then you get this clarity and complexity from clear aromatics but also the freshness. Nothing is too much, each part playing out in terms of weight, structure, acidity and length. It's the succulence then at the same time the salinity that captivated me, the two playing against each other with the support from plumped up and cushioned fruit giving the overall weight. Really lovely - a treat to taste. Drink 2024-2036.

  • Jane Anson, February 2022, Score: 98

Enticing waves of perfectly judged gunsmoke reduction on the first nose, dancing across the palate and hinting at minerality rather than closing things down. Fragrant, joyous, chiselled citrus, lime, chamomile and lemongrass, with a slate scrape texture giving grip, depth and persistency. I've said it before, but I put this right up there with my favourite dry white wines, alongside Pavillon Blanc, Remelluri Bianco and Penfold Yattarna. This is winemaker Axel Heinz working his magic. Love it. Drink 2023-2035.

Producer

Ornellaia

Since being founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia has firmly established itself as one of the most revered wine estates in the world. Situated on the Tuscan coast, within the iconic Bolgheri appellation, the estate has long been dedicated to producing wines of unrivalled beauty and elegance. Thanks to the combination of Bolgheri’s unique terroir and growing conditions, Ornellaia consistently produces world-class wines from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, all of which are full of Mediterranean charisma. With an eighty-person strong team working full-time, Ornellaia’s passion and attention to detail is essential to its legacy; complacency is forbidden, and such is their meticulous approach, that everything is done on a grape-by-grape basis. Since 2006, Winemaker and Estate Director Axel Heinz has attributed a single word to each year, with the intricacies of individual vintages being wonderfully captured by a chosen contemporary artist and reproduced as an exclusive label, as well as a site-specific work of art that remains part of the estate’s permanent collection. Not only is Ornellaia an ambassador for the region, but the estate also reaffirms the belief that Bolgheri’s distinctive climate and diversity of soils creates wines as complex and delightful as any in the world.

Region

Bolgheri

The medieval town of Bolgheri was originally made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci who wrote about the stunning Cypress Avenue, a breathtaking and magical three mile long corridor of trees leading up to the entrance to the village. Swept away to the coastal and most westerly area of Tuscany, Bolgheri has become synonymous with wines known as ‘Super Tuscans'. Composed of classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (intermixed with the occasional Sangiovese), the Super Tuscans began as mere experimentation in the 1960s and 70s. These international French varieties flourished in Bolgheri's warm, yet maritime climate which resulted in unexpected success and reknown. It is here that one finds such famous names as Ornellaia, Tignanello and Sassicaia.
