  • Goedhuis, March 2024

Lifted violets, pomegranate, watermelon, and sweet red cherry all grace this 2020 Bricco Ambrogio which comes from a small clay-rich vineyard in Roddi containing some very old vines. Perfumed with violets and red cherry and pomegranate and watermelon, the palate is marvellously caressing, generous and juicy thanks to its clay terroir. The finish leaves delicious saline, dried orange peel and incense notes. It is wonderfully relaxed with impressive breadth. Drink 2024-2030.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, November 2023, Score: 93

The graceful 2020 Bricco Ambrogio from Bruna Grimaldi is smooth and fragrant, with alluring scents of red berry, spice, rose and violet. Full-bodied and elegant, the savoury, already immensely enjoyable palate delivers juicy red cherry, strawberry compote and cake spice accompanied by polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced while a licorice note lingers on the close. Drink through 2032

Region

Piedmont

Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
