Region
Friuli
Fruili is the most north-eastern region in Italy that stretches to the Austrian and Slovenian borders. Here summers are hot and winters are cold and harsh. The weather from year to year can be unpredictable making vintages more important, especially for red wines. Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia di Istria, Verduzzo, Picolit, Refosco, Schiopettino and Pignolo are all considered to be local grape varieites. However after phylloxera many producers had to replant the vineyards and did so with better-quality foreign grape varieties, namely Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio. It wasn't until the late 1960s that Friuli wines really took off. This was generally thanks to German wine-making philosophy and temperature control, largely thanks to innovations usually credited to producer Mario Schiopetto. This gave Italy's first clean, fresh, fruity white wines and to this day this fashion has lasted. The best come from the ‘colli' or hilly areas wherewhite wines have crisp acidity and purity of varietal character. As far as red wines are concerned, there are many different types but there has been much success with complex Cabernet blends with Malbec and Merlot.
