The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has much more expressive mineralité on the nose compared to the Bienvenue. Vivacious, citrus-driven aromas gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a slightly oily-textured entry, plenty of extract here, very weighty and quite persistent towards the finish that just needs to subsume some of the oak. Very good potential. Drinking Window: 2025-2050.

Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

Region

Bâtard Montrachet

Bâtard-Montrachet is a great white Grand Cru in Burgundy's Côte D'or. Its vineyards are located onthe slope beneath Le Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Bâtard-Montrachet's soils are heavier than those surrounding it, made up of brown limestone and gravel, which pave the way for rich, nutty, honeyed and heady wines with good structure. They are not as elegant as those from Chevalier-Montrachet and are broader and weightier than wines from Montrachet.
