  • Goedhuis, December 2023

Unsurprisingly for a vineyard that sits between Romanée St Vivant, Echézeaux and Richebourg, this Premier Cru is highly esteemed. This is a Vosne Romanée that possesses muscle and structure. Intense aromas of bitter chocolate, mocha and dark berries. On the palate the overall weight and fully laden tannic profile slightly masks some of this exuberance of winter berries. However, the richness and sweet sensation on the finish shows this really is a high class wine for the long term.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, matured in 40% new oak, is intense on the nose, opulent yet controlled with mainly red berry fruit, allspice and rose petal scents, just a hint of black olive emerging with time. Very well-defined. The medium-bodied palate comes armed with a voluptuous entry, almost viscous in texture, intense yet delineated with a gradual build to its sweet and detailed finish. This will require four to five years to open for business, but it is certainly a "serious" Les Suchots with a wonderful spicy edge. Drinking Window: 2028-2050.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 92-95

A crimson to purple colour. The bouquet has refinement along with a sense of structure. The bouquet builds steadily to show a high-class red berry fruit, alpine strawberries. Very complete across the palate with an excellent tensile strength, and a very nicely constructed finish. Nothing too soft here. The strawberries return in full force after the refined tannins. Drink from 2030-2038.

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
