Day 2 and I have survived another bout of severe bullying from the ‘lads’. They even drove me to the cabinet vetinnaire to have me put down. Oh ha ha. In other news, tasting has been good today. We started at Ch Cheval Blanc which was elegant, refined, very pure and ‘comfortable’. We drove on to Moueix to taste their range for a bit more Pomerol and St Emilion. The stand-out wine here was Ch Belair Monange. Supreme class: stylish and poised.
We visited Evangile next- 93% merlot 7% cab franc- which was lovely. It is exuberant, flamboyant, luscious and very giving.
Next stop la Conseillante for Pomerol. The Beauregard showed really well as did the Petit Village- this one was Hugo’s fave. La Conseillante was also great- delicious, harmonious, fresh and beautifully balanced. A quick lunch there where we were treated to la Conseillante 2006- a refined wine with wonderful purity to go with some excellent pâté.
All in all so far, the best pomerols stand up alongside some of the finest of the vintage (with the odd disappointment). St Emilion as always was the hardest tasting. The highs are exceptional though such as Ch Figeac and Clos Fourtet. 2012 seems to have produced very generous wines that are early maturing that will give huge pleasure for early drinking for true wine lovers. Now on to the macaroon shop in St Emilion to refresh our palates.
