Ch Beauregard Pomerol 2015 | “Best I have tasted from here” James Suckling, 94-95

Slightly obscured by today’s grander releases, we really loved Beauregard when tasting in Bordeaux and it was one of our value picks of the vintage.

This picturesque Pomerol château is always a delight to visit in mid-April, its walls coated with wisteria in full bloom. It is a beautiful site and its wonderful 2015 was also full of radiance and charm.

Today this 14 hectare estate represents the very best between modernism and tradition, under the new joint ownership of the Moulin family (owners of Galeries Lafayette) and the Cathiards, proprietors of Smith Haut Lafitte. Together they have undertaken to install one of the most advanced wineries in the appellation. They have followed Ch Cheval Blanc’s lead with specially curved concrete tanks, felt to be the very best material and shape to optimise the charm and fruit personality of the Merlot variety. They have, however, maintained the same management team under the brilliant Vincent Priou who has made the wines for over 20 years.

This is an estate whose price always defies the quality of its location. It is the first property of the “golden mile” as you head out of the village of Pomerol before reaching Petit Village, La Conseillante, L’Evangile and on to VCC and Petrus…

This is a superbly generous 2015 which will be irresistible when young but has the ability to age with class.

A new owner, new winery, but the same winemaking team and possibly Vincent Priou’s greatest success during his many years running the estate. Striking ruby colour, this is a suave and sophisticated wine, with pure red berry flavours. Very graceful and deliciously giving at the end. Top class! Drink 2021-2034. Goedhuis, Score: 93-95

The change of ownership in 2015 – enter Florence and Daniel Cathiard – has given this property a shot in the arm. It’s a grassy, leafy, Cabernet Franc-influenced Pomerol with scented oak, bright acidity and a voluptuous mid palate. Drink: 2020-28 Tim Atkin MW, Score: 93

This is really exotic with bright blackberry, blueberry and chocolate aromas and flavors. Lots of walnuts. Full body, extra soft and silky tannins. Best I have tasted from here. James Suckling, Score: 94-95
