DRC is a potent acronym in the wine world – so when I was asked to deputize for our wine buyer at this morning’s tasting of the 2007 Domaine Romanee Conti red Burgundies I was the proverbial rat up a drainpipe.
6 wines, all Grand Crus with staggering reputations, and deservedly so, greeted us. Big Burgundy bowl shaped glass allowed plenty of swirl action, and so began the triumphant march of Aubert de Villaine’s army.
Echezaux first. Pure, some game, hint of barrique, lots of underlying power, long finish. What a start.
Then into Grands Echezaux. Much harder to taste, a bit closed up, but higher toned with some spice.
Then the Richebourg which I loved. Dark chocolate nose, mocha, black cherry, v fine tannins, plenty of power but pretty with it.
Romanee St Vivant seemed to soar to another level. Indulgently sweet nose, rich in black fruit, cherry and mulberry, fabulous concentration. I really like this.
Then to my all time favourite wine – La Tache. Huge power, earth, spice, rich and so hedonistic, but great clarity of flavour and a sumptuous finish. I definitely fancy some of this in my cellar – if only!
Finally the mighty Romanee Conti, of which a meagre 5400 bottles are produced. Very black fruit on the nose, leather, plum, earth, some tobacco. Massive concentration and a very very very long finish. Desert island wine.
