Intense classic Chablis | Buy these 2014s while you can

Archive

Alan Meadows, the preeminent authority on fine Burgundy, has recently re-tasted and re-scored the Chablis 2014s, reconfirming his (and our) initial glowing reviews.

“If you are like me, which is to say a lover of intense and classic Chablis, I would strongly advise searching for the 2014s that are still in the market place. I have been adding quite a few 2014s to my personal cellar as the prices remain reasonable and in the white burgundy category no other region offers better QPR than Chablis” Burghound

Below are some highlights of our remaining stock including Burghound’s new notes and scores. It is worth noting that, while I do not think you have to wait quite as long as Burghound suggests, these wines will all benefit from another year or two in the cellar.

Quite simply these are great wines, really well priced, which will give so much pleasure over the next five years. They are what I want to be drinking at home, and in fact I put another couple of cases into my cellar yesterday as I am sure they will soon sell out.

Chablis-2014

Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Troesmes Domaine Pommier 2014

£165.00 per 12 IB
Noticeable wood frames the otherwise fresh and pure aromas of white and yellow orchard fruit and tidal pool that precedes the lush and opulent but punchy medium-bodied flavors that possess a textured finale thanks to the copious amount of sappy dry extract. This is certainly very rich but it doesn’t lack for verve and this is a 2014 1er that will both age yet drink well young. Outstanding. Drink 2020+ 91 points

Chablis 1er Cru Montmain Domaine Pinson Freres 2014
£180.00 per 12 IB
This offers up another layer of aromatic elegance with its equally cool and notably floral-suffused nose that blends citrus peel, mineral reduction and pungent iodine scents. There is fine intensity and delineation to the middle weight flavors that possess fine balance and minerality on the saline-inflected and strikingly long finale. Excellent. Outstanding. Drink 2021+ 92 points

Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Domain Pinson Freres 2014
£195.00 per 12 IB
A notably ripe but not exotic nose displays notes of yellow orchard fruit along with subtle hints of mineral reduction and lemon peel. There is a really lovely texture to the medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract before culminating in rich and generously proportioned finale that delivers fine length if not quite the same energy as the Montmains but even so, this is really quite good. Outstanding. Drink 2020+ 91 points

Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Domaine Billaud-Simon 2014
£89.00 per 6 IB
This too is distinctly cool and reserved with its pretty, spicy and airy array of citrus, iodine and ocean breeze scents. There is beautiful intensity and delineation to the delicious and energetic medium-bodied flavors that deliver solid richness and persistence on the well-balanced finish. This excellent effort should amply reward 6 to 8 years of cellaring. Outstanding. Drink 2021+ 92 points

Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu Domaine Billaud-Simon 2014
£115.00 per 6 IB
While there is a trace of exotic character to the citrus-inflected white orchard fruit nose it is more discreet than usual. The medium-bodied flavors are tightly coiled with terrific energy that is so mineral-driven that the bone dry finish is like sucking on tiny stones. This is not the most refined wine here but it is admirably intense. While clearly extremely young this should still be approachable young. Drink 2020+ 92 points

Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir Domaine Billaud-Simon 2014
£195.00 per 6 IB
A discreet but not invisible application of wood sets off the ultra-fresh, ripe and airy aromas of pear, rose petal and green fruit along with plenty of Chablis elements along with a whiff of the exotic. There is a bit more volume on the palate compared to the Preuses with ample power and punch that continues onto the detailed, mineral-driven and explosively long finish. Simply put, wow. Drink 2024+ 94 points

Chablis 1er Cru Montmains Domaine Jean-Paul Droin 2014 (limited)
£220.00 per 12 IB
There is ample mineral reduction present on the cool and airy nose of pear, spice, apple and iodine-nuances. I very much like the racy energy to the intense and admirably pure medium weight flavors that possess an attractive sense of refinement, all wrapped in a round, supple and accessible finish. This is also very pretty and is a 2014 that could be enjoyed young if desired. Outstanding. Drink 2020+ 91 points
