Every en primeur campaign there is a wine that stands out for its quality and outstanding value. In 2016 we believe Ch Capbern is that wine.
St Estèphe is undoubtedly one of the most successful appellations in 2016 and Capbern simply excelled in this vintage. Released today at £170 per 12, we simply cannot recommend it more highly.
Ch Capbern, located between Ch Phélan Ségur and Ch Meyney, is owned by the lauded 3rd growth, Ch Calon-Ségur. Under the new ownership of Jean-Pierre Moueix and direction of Laurent Dufau, this chateau is making the best wines in its history, benefiting from investment in the vineyards and an outstanding winemaking team.
In an ideal world you should buy a case of bottles, a case of magnums and some double magnums. A wonderful 2016.

Love the stone, tar and black currant in this. Full and tight with firm and silky tannins and a long, long finish. Spicy, too. Can’t wait to see how this evolves. Serious. James Suckling, 92-93 points.
69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 4% very old Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. 60% new oak. Very deep crimson. Round and flattering texture with lots of zappy tannin. A little more angular than the famous 2009 but very easy to drink. Very round tannins but they are there in such profusion that you will have to wait… Drink 2024-2032. Jancis Robinson MW, 17 points.
