Opus One is a global icon. This coveted collector’s prize, born of a visionary joint venture between the Kings of the Old and New worlds, Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, embodies luxury and exclusivity.
Since 1979 they have been crafting a very special Bordeaux style Californian Cabernet. Napa fruit, from the prized Oakville terroir renowned for growing Bordeaux varieties, is blended with the expertise, knowledge and heritage a First Growth Chateau commands; this gives the unique signature of Opus One – power and finesse.
Last week we had the pleasure of tasting the new release of Opus One at our offices, the eagerly anticipated 2013 vintage. It radiates class; different to 2012 which was showy and opulent, this is more reserved with brooding power and elegance. The blend of fruit and velvety structure is something to behold, very similar to the great 2009 & 2010 vintages in Bordeaux.
The brilliant streak of vintages we have seen from this estate in the last decade continues and Michael Silacci remains one of the most thoughtful and talented winemakers in Napa. The 2013 encapsulates his greatness.
“with the last few vintages, Opus One seems to have entered a newfound period of brilliance.” Antonio Galloni
With recent vintages moving into a new chapter of quality, this is a vintage for collectors and speculators alike.

The greatest Opus ever. Terrific aromas of crushed black currants, blueberries and flowers with hints of sweet tobacco. Roses continue to exude opulence and class. Full body, superb balance of ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity. Complex aftertaste of black fruits and citrus fruit. Extremely persistent. So approachable now and enjoyable. But will be even better in 2019 and beyond. This will always be beautiful to drink. 100 pts James Suckling
Dark cherries, plums, smoke, licorice, new leather and menthol race across the palate in the 2013 Opus One. Firm yet also voluptuous, the 2013 has it all. The combination of fruit and structure is superb. Today, the 2013 reminds me of the 2010 when it was young, especially in its energy and pure power. The flavor remain quite primary, one of the signatures of this great Napa Valley vintage 2020-2038. 94-96+ pts Antonio Galloni
