Vega Sicilia ‘Spain’s most consistently great winery’

Archive

The iconic Spanish wine estate Vega Sicilia unquestionably produces wines to rival the world’s finest. For the past 150 years its wines have celebrated the brilliance of the Ribera del Duero and been at the forefront of great Spanish winemaking. Vega Sicilia was the first to combine the indigenous Tempranillo grape with France’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, producing sublime results.

The flagship wine, Unico, a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon is a peerless example of winemaking. Only produced in the finest vintages and aged for a minimum of ten years before it is released onto the market, it is a wine that fully expresses the extraordinary potential of this wonderful terroir.

This quality is abundantly evident across the entire range; from Valbuena, made to the same exacting standards as Unico but aged for less time, to Alion, a pure Tempranillo sourced from old vines aged in 100% French oak; to the delicious and juicy, early drinking Pintia, another straight Tempranillo, born of the wilder but no less captivating Toro region to the west of the Vega Sicilia estate.

The recent substantial investment in the property and an unwavering focus on quality shine through and these latest releases offer collectors at all levels a chance to cellar and enjoy gems from this inimitable estate.

* The wines will be shipped in Spring 2018. We will contact you to confirm arrival times. Free UK delivery on orders over £300, otherwise £18

Unico Reserva Especial Bodegas Vega Sicilia 2018 Release
(A blend of 2005, 2006 and 2007 Unico)
£720.00 per 3 bottles IB (Very limited)

A blend of vintages which is then aged for a further 2/3 years before release. Only 15,000 bottles made. 2 years in oak once they have established the blend of the vintages. Then 5-7 years in bottle.

Notes of blue and black fruits on the nose with a hint of Cabernet menthol adding complexity, the palate has layers of sweet dark fruits, notes of cigar box and a satin smooth texture from the fine-grained tannins. This wine is blended to reflect the Vega style at its very best, should you be in a hurry to experience the beauty of what this domain can produce then look no further. Goedhuis & Co

Valbuena 5° Ribera del Duero Bodegas Vega Sicilia 2013
£234.00 per 3 bottles IB

This is a mini Unico: Since 2010 it has had its own winemaking facility, so each individual parcel can be tracked to ensure quality. Aged for 5 months in large wooden barrels, 18 months in new French/American barrels, 3 months in used casks followed by an extra 5 months in vats before bottling.

Beautiful vibrant ruby colour, this Valbuena has a wonderfully complex nose of black cherries, raspberries and cedar. The palate is silky and refined, the tannins soft and the palate exhibits a level of finesse that culminates in an elegant, persistent and, frankly, delicious finish. Goedhuis & Co

Alión Ribera del Duero Bodegas y Viñedos Alión 2014
£258.00 per 6 bottles IB

Aged for between 14 and 20 months in new French oak barrels and then at least a further 15 months in bottle. Pablo Alvarez stated aim is to create a wine that sits “somewhere between Ribera del Duero and a Médoc in style”.

Beautiful blackberry and black cherry compote on the nose with a touch of graphite and mineral freshness. The palate is silky but tightly wound, a structured mid-palate suggests some cellar time would allow this beauty to fully reveal itself. Goedhuis & Co

Pintia Toro Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia 2013
£168.00 per 6 bottles IB (Limited)

Expressive nose of rich dark, plummy fruits. Lots of interest here, complex even for a youthful Pintia. The palate is concentrated, fresh and very well balanced, soft tannins are evident on the finish. There is an elegance and a restraint to this Pintia that we love. A hint of Pomerol-esque plumminess. Highly recommended. Drink now or hold for a year to two if you can resist its charms. Goedhuis & Co
