From the domaine's 1.5-hectares, the usual 20 barrels was reduced to half for the 2012 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. It has an opulent, vivacious bouquet with small dark cherries, blueberry and crème de cassis that is deliriously gorgeous. The palate is sweet on the entry with fleshy boysenberry and bilberry fruit. There is good presence and length here, although it needs just a touch more nuance on the finish. Always a solid performed, this comes recommended.

The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with wild strawberry and redcurrant scents, forest floor and wild mint that expands in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, good acidity and plush blackberry and cassis fruit encasing the finish that is reminiscent of the Bonnes-Mares. Good length here - this is very fine, though not quite reaching for the stars.

The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes comes from a single 0.31-hectare parcel that was planted in 1980. It has a deep purple color. The nose is very intense with blackberry, cassis and spice aromas - quite a feisty, precocious bouquet here. Conversely, the palate is firm, masculine and structured. It is quite introspective at the moment with an austere finish: a Chambolle worth tucking away for 5-6 years.

The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras comes from 0.68-hectares of vines around 70-years old. It has a refined bouquet that contains the most finesse this year - just everything perfectly in place on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, very tense with life-affirming mineralité. The terroir is succinctly articulated and the finish is long and penetrating. This Les Cras has a structure that is almost severe, yet still compelling on its uncompromising stony finish. This is outstanding - but one for hardcore Chambolle aficionados!

The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins; fine tension and a strict, focused finish with fine mineralité that will hopefully develop a touch more persistency during the remainder of its élevage.

It has an earthier, more forest-floor influenced bouquet that pierces the black and red fruits. The palate is lively on the entry with a gentle grip. This is very fresh and lithe, handling the new oak with style and departing with an effervescent kiss on the finish. This is both delicious and entrancing.

The 2012 Musigny Grand Cru is limited to one 350-litre barrel this year. It has a sensational bouquet that is extremely pure and opulent, though focused and mineral-driven. Of all the Musigny barrel samples I have encountered, this is the most decadent. The palate is very well balanced, very intense in the mouth with blackcurrant pastille, cassis, raspberry and orange zest. Silky smooth in texture, it feels almost opaque on the finish, such is the density. This is a sumptuous Musigny packed with pleasure.

Still, the palate is very fresh and mineral-driven with great tension and a sense of weightlessness on the graphite finish that will ensure this will be a riveting premier cru once in bottle. You can feel that stoniness tingling on the finish long after the wine has departed!

This is a robust effort that in 2012 is more Nuits than Vosne in character. Note that my score assumes that the reduction is a passing phase. Drink 2027+

Very mild reduction does not completely obliterate the floral character and the underlying fruit seems quite ripe as well. As is usually the case the supporting structure here is notably finer than that of the Les Procès which imparts a refined mouth feel to the middle weight flavors. I like the underlying sense of tension and particularly the balance and while this is not presently quite as complex, it's certainly more elegant.

It has a little more delineation on the nose than the Aux Thorey, perfumed and floral with distant scents of dried orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent, candied entry. The acidity is nicely judged with blood orange infusing the red cherry fruit on the precocious finish. This is lip-smacking delicious.

It has a very refined bouquet that just needs a little more terroir expression: introspective at the moment, yet complex and nicely delineated. It is struck through with a fine bead of acidity, the fruit so pure that it is almost like caviar and consequently, I feel that it just dispenses with some of its individuality, as gorgeous as it is.

The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru, which comes from a 0.28-hectare parcel planted in 1950, this year contains 20% whole bunches and the domaine were graced with five barrels. It has a very refined and distinctly aristocratic bouquet adorned with beautifully defined black and red fruits, perhaps leaning towards the former with aeration. Touches of seaweed and tilled earth emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. It does not have the charm of the RSV at the moment, but there is beguiling structure and symmetry with a long mineral laden finish. Superb.

Though this is a bit more deeply pitched the nose is actually compositionally similar to that of the Romanée St. Vivant. I love the sense of underlying tension to the mineral-driven, taut and naturally muscular flavors that are shaped by impressively fine-grained tannins before culminating in a gorgeously long, intense and palate staining finish. This firmly structured, explosive and beautifully well-balanced effort should be fantastic in time. Drink 2027+

The 2012 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru comes from 0.48-hectares of vine planted back in 1920 It already boasts a show-stopping mineral-rich bouquet that offers astounding definition and focus. Terroir, terroir and terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with superb definition and so much freshness it does not know what to do with itself. Beautifully focused, refined and feminine, this might be the quintessential R.S.V. of the vintage.

A buoyantly spicy nose displays elegant aromas of red currant, raspberry, sandalwood and soft floral nuances. As is almost always the case chez Hudelot this possesses the most refined mouth feel in the range with ultrafine grained tannins adding to this impression. Notwithstanding the refinement exhibited by the mid-palate, the strikingly long and well-balanced finish seems to flirt with a touch of rusticity. Whether this quality will persist is hard to say but it would be fair to observe that 2012 isn’t the most refined vintage that I have ever seen for this wine. Drink 2027+

As is almost always the case chez Hudelot this possesses the most refined mouth feel in the range with ultra-fine grained tannins adding to this impression on the silky, strikingly long and impeccably well-balanced finish. The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets has a refined, restrained bouquet at first, once again beautifully defined, almost pixelated, unfolding with dark cherries and wild strawberry with every passing moment. The palate is vibrant and tense on the entry. The oak is just a little more prominent here, but totally in synch with the fruit and there is real weight and purpose towards the harmonious finish. Superb.

The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts comes from 0.75-hectares of 42-year old vine, the largest of Cathiard's premier crus. After allowing a few minutes of the reduction to blow away, it reveals a lovely bouquet drenched in mineral-rich dark berry fruit - blackberry and blueberry on full song. The palate is medium-bodied and tightly wound at the moment but there is a wonderful sense of symmetry and poise. This is a brilliant wine.

As one would expect from a first-rate example there is excellent volume, power and muscle to the intensely mineral-infused big-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the explosively long and impeccably well-balanced finish that goes on and on. This is flat out terrific though note that a minimum of 10 and probably 15 years will be required to fully realize the marvelous development potential. A classic Malconsorts of power and depth. The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts comes from a small 0.14-hectare of vines planted in 1950. This year it was reduced from three to two and a half barrels. It has a broody, intense but entrancing bouquet with dark plum, raspberry and mineral scents that are beautifully placed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. There is plenty of intense red and black fruit dialed into this nascent Malconsorts that is almost regimented in style, but with a wonderful linear finish that is compelling. Superb.

(from a .5 ha parcel; note that in 2012 this was bottled exclusively in magnum where 300 were produced - my predicted range is necessarily based on this format). Like the Charmes this is wonderfully exuberant with an overtly spicy nose of both red and blue pinot fruit, floral elements and a hint of oak. There is good volume and excellent minerality to the well-delineated, powerful and deep medium-bodied flavors that deliver first-rate persistence. Note that the supporting tannins are dense but fine and this will require many years of bottle age to resolve the tannins. As excellent as the description makes this wine sound I had the same niggling concern here that I did with the Suchots, which is to say that the nose may go secondary relatively early and thus predicting when might be the optimal time to open one of these magnums is not easy to predict. My score offers the benefit of the doubt though here too I include a cautionary question mark. Drink 2034+

The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots comes from 16-year old vines within 0.25-hectares, which is being matured in five barrels of which four are new. It has abundant brambly red berry fruit underneath a touch of reduction, though you feel a bit like Etienne Grivot's Reignot, this is not firing on all cylinders in 2012. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins: pure black cherry and raspberry fruit with vanilla-laced oak defining the finish at the moment, though that will meld with time. This is probably the one cru where it is difficult playing the clairvoyant.

The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots comes from a 0.45-hectare holding planted back in 1920. It has a slightly muted nose out of barrel, but it unfurls revealing earthy, mossy scents with aeration. The palate is clean and fresh, but somehow foursquare and a little conservative compared to some of the domaine's other premier crus. You get the impression that this Les Suchots is hiding something up its sleeve, whereas this vineyard is habitually one of the most expressive in its youth.

There is an elegant mouth feel to the luscious and generously proportioned middle weight flavors that possess a velvety texture, all wrapped in a beautifully complex finish. If there is a concern though it’s that this very firmly structured effort feels as though it may turn secondary relatively early in its evolution. As such I underscore my concern with a question mark because it will certainly require more than 8 years of bottle age to resolve the tannins yet the fruit may no longer be there. Drink 2020+

The palate is medium-bodied with nice thick tannins that feel ripe and soft in the mouth. The acidity is well-judged and there is a sense of nonchalance and harmony towards the finish. All you could want from a village cru.

There is moderate wood influence to the ripe menthol, spice and cassis suffused nose. The wood is also present on the palate and it imparts a slightly finishing bitterness at present. The concentrated and big-bodied flavors would appear to have the mid-palate stuffing to integrate it with a few years of bottle age and my score offers the benefit of the doubt in this regard.
