With the eagerly anticipated new 2013 release of Ornellaia due to happen shortly, we are also releasing a small parcel of their acclaimed ‘second wine’, Le Serre Nuove 2013.
First produced in 1997, Le Serre Nuove has risen to become not only one of the finest Tuscan releases each year, but also one of the world’s great second wines consistently rivalling those released from Bordeaux.
Produced with the same passion and attention to detail as the flagship wine, and from the estate’s younger vineyards, Le Serre Nuove is a true reflection of Ornellaia’s fine pedigree.
This benchmark 2013 release benefits from an elevated level of Cabernet Franc reflecting the nature of what is a true Cabernet vintage. A blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 12% Petit Verdot, the grapes are vinified separately prior to the fermentation taking place in stainless steel. Subsequent ageing then occurs in a mix of new and one year old barrels for 15 months prior to release.
Engaging and vibrant with a firm structure, Le Serre Nuove 2013 displays wonderful generosity, opulence and charm. The wild red berry fruit and herbal notes lend an expressive quality to the nose while polished, glossy tannins on the palate contribute to a long and elegant finish.
In line with what we have witnessed so far from this great Tuscan year, Le Serre Nuove consistently punches way above its weight and will develop into a sensational wine to consume between 2018-2025.
The wine will available for delivery in June. For more information or to buy call us on 020 7793 7900 or email sales@goedhuis.com
2013 Le Serre Nuove | Tenuta dell’Ornellaia
£155.00 per 6 bottles In Bond
The 2013 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is polished and refined to the core. Mocha, smoke, black cherries, licorice, torrefaction and dark spices meld together in the glass. This is a relatively open, mid-weight vintage for the Serre Nuove, with expressive aromatics and open-knit fruit. The new oak is especially apparent here. In some recent vintages, Le Serre Nuove has come across as almost too serious of a second wine. That is not the case in 2013, where Le Serre Nuove is quite distinct from Ornellaia, and also much more approachable right out of the gate. The 2013 also has a relatively high amount of Cabernet Franc because less was used in the Ornellaia than normal. 90pts Antonio Galloni
A marvellous summer and a cool, sunny September made it possible to achieve perfect maturation of the grapes despite the difficult flowering period, with wines that express a particularly elegant side. Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2013 has an intense, bright colour. The nose is vibrant and fruity underscored by delicate toasty notes. On the palate, the smooth, silky texture contrasts with tannins of great freshness. Whilst its structure will enable it to mellow with age, the crispness of the fruit and its soft, fine character make it perfect to enjoy straight away. Axel Heinz (Winemaker)
