JC's Christmas Crackers

Archive

Christmas morning – stockings, Ralph, Caroline and Percy in the bed, a fuzziness of head and an anticipation of the first drink of the day, which in my case will be as soon as church is done.

Nothing refreshes a “carolled out” throat better than a cold glass of vintage Champagne. Laurent Perrier 1990 is in the fridge, my wedding year, and an extraordinarily wonderful vintage, biscuity but still fresh and a lively bubble. This will slam the body into gear and perfectly compliment some pre-lunch salmon.

For the main event I am in the hands of my step-father-in-law. I did spot a few botts of Gruaud Larose 1989 last time I was there and if I can persuade those out of the rack I will. Should be fabulous, classic claret from St Julien, ready to go now, and won’t overwhelm the turkey.

Christmas pudding has to be one of my favourites, tricky to match but a glass of Ch Doisy Vedrines, 2eme Cru Sauternes 1988 should be a winner with that and to ensure sleep accompanies the Queens speech, will be some Croft 1963, just a perfect vintage and drinking now, made even better by a sliver of Stilton. Can’t wait.

Happy New Year !
