New Release: 2009 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904

Archive

The sumptuous 904 bottling comes from 300 hectares of vineyards spread across the best zones of the Rioja Alta region. This first class Rioja is a firm favourite with the Goedhuis team and a wine we follow every year – it is utterly delicious and so easy to drink.

With an extremely impressive heritage and consistently high level of quality, it is no wonder La Rioja Alta’s wines receive glowing awards and reviews from the top critics. Happily this praise has not gone to their head and prices have stayed remarkably fair.

‘Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar.’ Neal Martin

2009 is a superlative year for La Rioja Alta. Luis Gutierrez says the vintage has produced “Powerful wines built to last”. The winery praise 2009 for its finesse and balance and think it may be the best 904 since 2001. 2009’s dry summer was saved by rain in mid-September. This resulted in very healthy grapes with great phenolic ripeness.

We loved the 2009; it has a gorgeous creamy velvety texture, dark red-fruited profile, with Christmas spices and a meaty savoury finish. It is reminiscent of 2005 with its ripe, alluring aromatics, but its underlying power and structure echo Rioja’s great vintages.

‘2009 was a warm, ripe vintage, uniformly good. Some stunning wines were produced that year and many wines will age superbly. Powerful wines built to last.’ Luis Gutierrez

As with the 2007 release, there was much less wine produced than in previous vintages, so quantities are limited. Volumes should return to normal with the 2010 vintage. Please be quick to avoid disappointment.

Reflecting the excellence of the vintage, as well as its power, this is the latest in a superb run of 904 Gran Reservas. Combining Tempranillo with 10% Graciano for added backbone and grip, it’s a wine that is (as ever) supremely drinkable on release, but will reward further cellaring. Spicy, aromatic and enticing, with the vanilla sweetness of American oak, savoury tannins and a core of stylish, balsamic-edged fruit. Traditional Rioja with a modern accent. 96 points, Tim Atkin

Outstandingly intense cherry-red; clean and bright. The nose reveals a bouquet of great aromatic complexity, with balsamic notes of vanilla, toasted caramel, mint chocolate, tea leaves and cinnamon that gives way to elegant notes of stewed fruits and prunes. Creamy, well-balanced mouthfeel, with a harmonious freshness and smooth, well-tamed tannins that leave an elegant, complex finish. Julio Saenz, Winemaker
