With my 60th birthday approaching I was thinking about the best deal I ever did. During the mid-seventies I was the unofficial agent for Louis Roederer in Paraguay. 500 cases of Cristal disappeared in Paraguay to be smuggled across the border into Brazil. It was glorious business.
A highlight of my relationship with Roederer was a lunch with the Brazilian agent complaining bitterly about the contraband champagne flooding into Brazil. André Rouzaud had introduced me as his Saville Row tailor.
Sadly as market improved, and became better regulated, the deal came to an amicable end.
