These are made for us by two of our favourite growers who both have an enormous following at Goedhuis: Jean-Philippe Fichet in Meursault and Vincent Charton in Mercurey. The wines come from two of the best recent vintages for white and red Burgundy respectively: 2014 and 2015.
Specially created for us by one of Meursault’s most acclaimed growers, Jean-Philippe Fichet, to represent a classic Côte d’Or white. 2014 was an exceptional year for white Burgundy and this example displays the lovely cut of citrus freshness so typical of the outstanding vintage, balanced by a creaminess on the palate. This has the purity of its great vintage combined with a beautifully accessible palate and a crisp, quenching finish.
We tasked a talented young grower in Mercurey, Vincent Charton, with creating our own label red Burgundy, and over the past two vintages he has exceeded our expectations. This latest release is so representative of the gorgeous 2015 vintage – supple, concentrated fruit with textural, ripe acidity. This is a hugely enjoyable Pinot Noir with cranberry and pomegranate spice, agile tannins, and a suave, savoury fruit core. MOUTON ROTHSCHILD REVEAL THEIR 2015 LABEL
Since 1945 Château Mouton Rothschild has commissioned a famous artist to design its label each year. Announced 2 days ago, the 2015 label, designed by Gerhard Richter, is the first vintage to carry the signature of the next generation. Philippe Sereys de Rothschild’s signature replaces that of his late mother, Baroness Philippine.
This year there is also a hand written assurance that ‘Mouton ne change pas’, ‘I, Mouton do not change’. The Château offered the same assurance on the 1987 label when the Baroness took over from her father.
NEAL MARTIN ON THE MOVE
It seems that Neal Martin no longer advocates the Wine Advocate, having defected this week to join Antonio Galloni’s crack team of wine writers, including Stephen Tanzer, Josh Raynolds, Ian d’Agata and David Schildknecht at Vinous.
Martin will look after Bordeaux (of course), Burgundy (shared with Stephen Tanzer), South Africa and New Zealand.
These are exciting times for Vinous and cement its reputation as one of the leading websites for trusted wine writing.
