With autumn drawing in there are few things that comfort us more than drinking a great Rioja; gorgeous dark red fruit flavours, a little spice of oak, culminating in a long, creamy, savoury fruit finish; very few things are better!
Goedhuis have invested a lot of time to select the very best from this celebrated region and after a series of blind tastings we unanimously settled upon the Viña Real Rioja Reserva 2010 for our ‘house’ Rioja. It received the perfect 10/10 from all the team and our two MWs… high praise indeed!
Viña Real is one of the C.V.N.E estates, established in the 1870s, it is still run today by Real de Asúa family members. With an extremely impressive heritage and consistently high level of quality, it is no wonder their wines receive awards and glowing reviews from the top critics. A smashing 93 from Wine Advocate and Antonio Galloni for their 2010s. Happily, this praise has not gone to their head and prices have stayed remarkably fair.
2010 will go down as one of the greatest vintages in Rioja history, so make sure you stock up on these wines. The Reserva* is the perfect introduction to Rioja, with all the hallmarks of the region and is drinking superbly now; both bottles and magnums are available for immediate delivery. The Gran Reserva** is a step up in intensity, “smooth and seamless in character”, and will continue to drink well for a further decade.
Vintages like 2010 don’t come along very often. Quantities of this vintage are extremely limited, especially in the case of the Gran Reserva.
Both wines are perfect reds to see you through the autumn evenings and the rare large formats are ideal for Christmas.

Upfront red fruit on the nose, a little spice of oak, and complex savoury flavours on the palate resulting from its 2 years’ ageing in barrel. 90% Tempranillo gives it a juicy cherry substance and fine, silky tannins; and the small splash of Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo adds depth and freshness. 2010 is a particularly successful vintage in Rioja, and this example is drinking perfectly now. Drink 2017-2021 Goedhuis & Co
Going one step up in the quality ladder, the Viña Real 2010 Reserva plays with the advantage of being cropped from a quite balanced, fresh vintage, a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrel for 22 months, during which time it was racked every four months. This wine has all the classical aromas of an old time Rioja, cherries, vanilla, some coconut, dill, leather, cured meat, incense, old furniture and cold bonfire. The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced with great acidity and fine tannins that make it easy to drink. Pop or keep. It has good freshness, and with time in the glass it develops beautiful aromas of orange peel that transmit very good freshness. 93 Points Wine Advocate

Deep, vivid red. Spicy, highly perfumed red currant, cherry and candied rose scents, along with suggestions of vanilla and woodsmoke that build in the glass. Sweet, concentrated and penetrating, offering palate-staining, smoke-tinged cherry and red berry flavors given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Very smooth and seamless in character; tannins play a supporting role in an impressively long, sappy, red-fruit-driven finish. (fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and two years of aging in a combination of French and American oak barrels; aged in bottle for three years before release). 93 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous
