At a client tasting last night there was one wine that stood out amongst many of its more prestigious Left Bank neighbours, Chateau Lanessan 2009. Serving this blind I asked guests for price predictions, results were £35-40 a bottle.

Located just south of the renowned 2nd Growth Gruaud-Larose, covering 40 hectares in the commune of Cussac-Fort-Médoc, this Chateau produces a superb Cabernet dominated blend at a fraction of the price. Following the hugely successful 30 year reign of Hubert Bouteiller, who reduced his ownership responsibilities in 2009, this estate has been run by a passionate and charming Spanish woman, Paz Espejo. 2009 was Paz’s first vintage and if this is anything to go by, we have a lot to look forward to in the future from this under-the-radar property.

2009 Chateau Lanessan Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc
£105 per 6 bottle case Duty Paid inc VAT (£17.50 per bottle)
“Ripe black currant fruit with some cedar wood, licorice and wood spice are all present in this generously endowed, concentrated, low-acid Lanessan. The tannins are silky, and the overall impression is one of elegance, plumpness and beautiful intensity. This is a sleeper of the vintage and one that should only improve over the next several years and merit an outstanding rating. It should keep for up to two decades. Drink 2015 – 2032.”
89+ Points. Robert Parker.
