I have just returned from a wonderful week’s tasting in Italy across the central spine of Tuscany.
Excited by the extraordinary high quality of recent releases, over the next few weeks we will be focusing on our growers in Montalcino to the south of Siena as well as those further north into the heart of Chianti Classico.
First up is the stunning 11 hectare Salicutti estate situated on the southeastern slopes of Montalcino, a grower which excels every year. The latest Brunello 2012, released in February, may have sold out quickly but we are delighted to have secured a small parcel of their superb Rosso di Montalcino 2014 that can be enjoyed right now.
Aged for the statutory 12 months and released earlier than the Brunello di Montalcino for immediate drinking, the grapes for the Rosso 2014 hail from the distinguished Sorgente vineyard. Here terroir is paramount. Sorgente’s tremendous exposure to the sun and excellent ventilation culminates in a wine that is a firm notch up from standard Rosso di Montalcino.
If the calibre of a Montalcino winery is measured by the quality of their Rosso di Montlacino, then Salicutti sits at the summit of Montalcino wine production – for their 2014 Rosso is simply delightful.
The 2014 is a supple, elegant wine of intense red fruits and exquisite balance to enjoy now and over the next 6-12 months. We cannot recommend it more highly.
“Salicutti is without question one of the leading estates in Montalcino… The wines are superb.” Antonio Galloni

Hailing from the Sorgente vineyard, the 2014 Rosso encapsulates all of the finest points of the vintage. Medium weight and perfectly balanced, the fruit shows excellent refinement and clarity exuding vibrant red cherry and cranberry flavours. The tannins are soft, integrated perfectly, totally seamless throughout. The wonderful freshness on the finish gives the wine lift and approachability. Simply delicious, the ideal red for autumn Sunday lunches!
