Giugi Sesti is quite simply our favourite Brunello producer. Charming and idiosyncratic, he is a true renaissance man who knows as much about art and astronomy as about wine. He oversees his Brunello estate from his hilltop winery and in spite of being a relative newcomer (he only planted his vines in 1991) is firmly established as one of the villages leading producers.
We have just received our allocation of his terrific 2003 vintage. Everyone else seems to think he is pretty good too…
“Medium red, with a hint of amber at the edge. Lovely perfumed aromas and flavors of cherry, leather, tobacco and dried flowers. Sweet, precise and high-pitched, with impressive energy giving the wine excellent grip. Conveys an impression of intensity without weight. The rising finish is suave, fresh and very long. Superb sangiovese complexity here, with virtually no sign of the vintage’s heat. A beauty.” 93/100 Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
In order to put this performance in context here are some scores from Mr Tanzer for some of the other great (and much pricier) Brunello estates:
Brunello di Montalcino Greppo Biondi Santi 2003 88(+?)?/100
Brunello di Montalcino Castelgiacondo Frescobaldi 2003 87/100
Brunello di Montalcino Siro Pacenti 2003 92(+?)/100
Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Antico 2003 87(+?)/100
Brunello di Montalcino Salicutti 2003 92/100
Brunello di Montalcino Pian di Conte Talenti 2003 91/100
And from Parker’s man in Italy..Antonio Galloni:”Sesti’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is an elegant, restrained wine that reveals the essence of Sangiovese in its notes of smoke, tar, mint, black cherries and licorice. A feminine, delicate Brunello, it shows very classic color and weight, with well-integrated tannins and lovely poise. 92/100. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.”
This is a bit of a no-brainer at only £290.00 ib per case for bottles. We also have 5 cases of mags (£300/cs). Give us a call on 020 7793 7900 if you would like more information or to buy a case.
Our full Brunello offer will be out next week but I thought a sneak preview of this was worth it.
